This Transitional Week

This Week’s Gifts
This is always a week like none other, the seven days from Christmas to New Year’s flying by on a whirl of activity. The spa is warmly animated as our Holiday Spa Gift Certificates are being purchased right through New Year’s, and our clients are coming in from the cold to be pampered and prettified for all the parties happening right now.

This Week’s Eating
One of my favorite quotes is about this week’s eating: It’s not what you eat between Christmas and New Year’s that puts on weight; it’s what you eat between New Year’s and Christmas.

If you think about it, this is a great quote. Let’s not agonize over the excesses of a week, or two but resolve to practice better eating habits the whole year long.

This Week’s Memory
We all have memories of this week spanning two holidays, this transitional time between the old year and the new one.

My finest memory of this cheery period is three years ago, in very late December of 2009. The Great Recession held the nation in its scary grip. Because my business was long-established and my biz survival skills finely honed, I was better positioned than many to survive the plummeting downturn; still, it was a challenging time.

Two days after Christmas, when that day’s New York Times hit the newsstands, there was a profile of me and my spa by the journalist Michael Winerip. The piece perfectly conveyed the tactics, tenacity and optimism which have always kept me in business during periodic economic crises.

The result, beyond the very welcome spike in business in the midst of hard times, was that I heard from many former clients who had moved far away and, after reading the Winerip profile, wrote to share their happy memories of my spa, their feelings of connection to me.

Wishing all of you a joyful time this transitional week.
